What are your coping mechanisms?
We often turn to a comfort when things get hard. Whether it’s a beverage or watching TV, figuring out what your coping mechanism is can help you refocus your healthy habits into something effective:
I know we all have coping mechanisms. Research has shown that some of the disorders we have, such as ADHD, could be something we develop to cope with life.
For someone else, it could be OCD, and for another, alcoholism could be their answer.
I want you to know that this space is a place where neither I nor you should be judging yourself and feeling guilt or shame a result. We all have coping mechanisms.
Something else we do have is control over our own actions and behaviours.
We have zero control over how other people treat us: but we have the capacity to choose how we respond to life’s inevitable challenges whenever they happen.
Maybe you open the drink cupboard when you’ve had a tough day, or decide to splurge and spend your money just to feel some level of excitement over the numbness you’ve fallen into to protect yourself.
